MusicFestNews Interview with Tauk

We had an amazing time at Bear Creek Music and Art Festival. What topped it off was not only experiencing Tauk live, but also an opportunity to meet this incredible group of musicians and exchange a few words with them

First of all, what are your names?
Matt Jalbert: I’m Matt. I play guitar.
A.C Carter: I’m Alric Carter and I play keys.

You guys must be excited, I’m sure, for all this new publicity you’re getting?
Matt Jalbert: Oh yeah!

You went to Lockn’, now you’re here at Bear Creek Music Festival for two sets. You’re starting to open up for the Disco biscuits, for Umphrey’s McGee, you’ve got a lot of stuff going on. How long have you guys been playing together?
Matt Jalbert: It’s been about three years.

Where did you guys meet?
Matt Jalbert: New York City area. We’ve known each other for our whole lives, three of us and then Isaac joined.

How much live music do you guys have available for people to download?
Matt Jalbert: Three albums; we have two full length albums that are out there and one EP, that’s like five songs. Then there are live shows which, you know, more and more are showing up online.

If we wanna get more information about Tauk, where should fans go?
A.C Carter: Through our official site or you can try our soundcloud and bandcamp as well.

If money were no object, which band would you follow for a month?
Matt Jalbert: Follow a band for a month? Um… Maybe Radiohead. Starkey Club, Stevie
A.C Carter: I’m gonna go with Robert Glasper.  He is a jazz pianist, but he just put out two records. It’s like neo-soul hip-hop.

How do you best describe your sound?
A.C Carter: We’re described as heavy instrumental rock fusion. That’s the short of it but you know, it’s all instrumental and we take on lot. Even from our answers there, you can see we listen to all of different kinds of music.

How many days you guys could be traveling this next year?
Matt Jalbert: Well, for this tour we left on October 2nd and we get back home right by Thanksgiving. By the end of this year, we’ll probably hit somewhere around 180 shows.

Wow, that’s awesome. And what’s one venue you guys always wanted to play but haven’t played yet?
Matt Jalbert and 3: Red rocks.

What band would you love to open for?
A.C Carter: Radiohead.

What would you say your your favorite moment was playing as a band?
A.C Carter: Oh, many.   Floydfest.
Matt Jalbert: That was good.
A.C Carter: The first year we were playing.
Matt Jalbert: Floydfest felt great!
A.C Carter: Yeah, I mean this year…
Matt Jalbert: Happens in rehearsal a lot too.
Matt Jalbert: Yeah, it’s hard to pick. Hudson project felt really good too.

When was that one?
Matt Jalbert: Hudson Project was in July and that was up in Upstate New York. It was kind of close to home for us and we’re one of the first bands to play at that festival. We weren’t really expecting for many people to come out but they did and the tent filled up! It was just one of those things where the energy was right and it was inspiring which felt good… it felt good.

So you guys have any new stuff coming out?
Matt Jalbert: Yeah, I mean the plan is that by the end of the year we’re gonna start not playing as many shows for a little while and write, get to start finishing out some new material so by the time we start hitting next year, we’ll have a bunch of new stuff.

Last question. What’s one thing that you really want people to know about you guys if they read about you or heard about you online or through a story? What’s one thing that they should remember about you guys?
Matt Jalbert: We love what we do! Money is not the issue, I do this regardless. I think we are all musicians inherently and we have to do this and we’re happy to be present, man, and we love to share what we have to say.
A.C Carter: That’s exactly what I would have said, which is true.
