Funkgrass, newgrass, soulgrass, bluegrass at The BIG What?

By now, you’ve looked at the amazing schedule for The BIG What? which starts this Thursday, hosted by Big Something in Mebane NC. There is incredible music pouring out of the alternating stages starting Thursday at 6:30 and then all day Friday and Saturday (and late into the night!).

There is a ton of funk and rock and psychedelia to dig into, but sometimes you need to dial it back just a bit. Bluegrass is the perfect occasional antidote, and three superb exponents of the widening genre are available for your toe-tapping, mad-dancing pleasure.

Dr. Bacon kicks off Friday’s festivities at noon with their self-styled “Appalachian soul grass funkabilly get-down music.” These boys hail from nearby Boone NC, and they are ready to get your Friday off to a rollicking, funk-grass-y start.

Later in the afternoon (6:30 – 7:30), between sets by Fat Cheek Kat and Imperial Blend, enjoy the traditional bluegrass/Americana blend brewed up by Cabinet. On the festival summer tour, Cabinet is travelling from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre PA; they will be at the Allgood Festival in July and the Peach Festival in August, plus numerous others.

Another NC product, Barefoot Manner, graces the stage Saturday from 6:30 – 7:45, after Groove Fetish and before The Fritz. They delight in “newgrass, soul-shaking funk and musical experimentation.” There’s no way you want to miss any of these fine bluegrass pickers.

And fortunately, as you can see from the schedule, you don’t need to miss a single note. Music alternates on two stages continuously throughout this glorious three-day romp.

Get your toe-tapping, mad-dancing shoes shined and ready! Unless, of course, you’re going barefoot!
