Time to Immerse Yourself in Roosevelt Collier’s Summer Splashdown
What would happen if you combined two great events: the Roosevelt Collier Suwannee Getdowns with Reunion: Campout Concert Series? Roosevelt hosted four excellent intimate events, and Trey Hebron hosted last year’s awesome Reunion: Campout Concert Series jamtronic funk blowout.
Answer? You would get Roosevelt Collier’s Summer Splashdown and Disc Golf Tournament at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park on July 29-31.
The initial lineup has been announced, featuring THREE days of music out at the beach, in addition to sets in the Music Hall and late-night Silent Disco to keep things going for hours.
More than a dozen bands and even more DJs will be on hand for the three-day event. The music is headlined, of course, by The Dr., Roosevelt Collier, one of Live Oak’s best ambassadors (along with Paul Levine). Collier will once again assemble an incredible band of musicians to totally funk up the place. Roosevelt and Friends just played a brilliant set at Purple Hatter’s Ball.
The Fritz bring their Asheville funk to the party; this quintet always throws down wicked sets. Boulder’s DYNOHUNTER returns to the park. Their set at last year’s Reunion was the talk of the weekend: HUGE! Rims and Keys from Chattanooga combines with Dave McSweeney (Greenhouse Lounge) for their brand of “new gangsta funk.”
Come Back Alice, featuring newlyweds Tony Tyler and Dani Jaye, will bring their gypsy swamp funk to the park, their first visit since Suwannee Hulaween. There isn’t a better soul revue band anywhere than The Legendary JCs, led by the incomparable Eugene Snowden. However, Holey Miss Moley comes pretty close. They have played entire sets of hip-hop and of P-Funk, and they will keep everybody dancing.
It’s tough to top Lucky Costello: wonderful jamtronic goodness plus a go-go dancer! The Psychedelic Monks live up to their name, with funky, space psychedelia pulsing through their set. They thrilled us at Little Econ Love Fest and at Orange Blossom Jamboree.
A word (and more to come) about three special bands. Lava, from Jacksonville, is a very special band playing adventurous experimental music. Their set at Little Econ was mesmerizing. Ism is a superb funky jazz band from Orlando led by Ian McLeod, who plays vibes. They had a super set at Little Econ and an even more amazing one at Orange Blossom Jamboree.
And that leaves the Galbraith Group. This awesome trio has greatly widened their range. Josh Galbraith plays guitar, and his sisters, Ashley and Taylor, are one badass rhythm section (bass and drums).
Bells and Robes bridges the gap between the bands and the DJs. This Gainesville duo just released a fine new EP, How Could We Have Known, in the spring. Bit Deff (Kyle Piety, Indianapolis) and Marvel Years (Cory Wythe, Burlington) bring their electro soul and future funk to SoSMP.
Lucidea is coming from Atlanta, DJ Ruby from Malta! And there is much, much more. Cat Party, Kolourz, NickFRESH, Eyitslowkey, and Exit 9 will be there too. So will Samsun Rising, Self Mayde, Bags, Kinder, Brother Dan and Dismantla, also making trips to Live Oak.
Two more gentlemen will be on the turntables/computers, two of the park’s best ambassadors and tireless workers. We are always glad to see and especially to hear Vlad the Inhaler and Matthew Connor.
If you haven’t been to the park for a beach event, you will be thrilled an delighted. Swimming in the Suwannee, lying on the beach, and listening to great music are truly afternoon delights. We are looking forward to the schedule for Roosevelt’s great event.
