Slightly Stoopid Brings West Coast Vibes to Brand New East Coast Amphitheater
Slightly Stoopid had the honor of being one of the first performers at Coney Island’s brand new Ford Amphitheater. The West Coast reggae/jazz band felt right at home as the ocean sat peacefully to their left as they looked out on a healthy crowd this past Saturday, July 23. Slightly Stoopid has been one of, if not the most, influential band in the reggae scene since the 1995 passing of Sublime front-man Bradley Nowell, whom they are heavily inspired by and had a close relationship with as young men. Frontmen Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty wowed crowds with their extremely high energy and talent that is hard to match. The two founding members switch off between guitar and bass as well as vocal duties throughout the show’s entirety, making it a fun experience for all.
The new amphitheater is directly on the Coney Island boardwalk and a beautiful place to see music. The staff was friendly, the lines moved nicely, and, although it is brand new, they seemed to have a hold of the chaos that is a few thousand concert goers. Slightly Stoopid played the perfect mix of their past albums classics such as “Officer”,”Ain’t Got a Lot of Money” and “‘Til It Gets Wet” along with their more jazzy tunes off the past two albums such as “Just Thinking” and “Profit” which they wrote with the late, great Nowell. They were even nice enough to treat the crowd with a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Franklins Tower” to close out the night in NY.
It is always a treat to get Stoopid on the East Coast, and from their reaction I got the sense they enjoy New York as well. There was much love shown in the crowd as one of the most respectable bands in the business came to play at our newest venue.
