This Week: Ween Releases GodWeenSatan Live!

It’s been a crazy week for many of us, and I think we can all use a reminder of the awesome news recently announced by one of the most eclectic bands of the 90’s and today. Ween will release their first live album since 2008 this week. The double-album GodWeenSatan Live will be available this Friday, November 18.

In 2011, Ween announced the end of an era when Aaron Freeman, a.k.a Gene Ween, decided to retire from the band. It turned out that Freeman was suffering from addiction and felt it was necessary to remove himself in order to take control of his substance abuse problem. Founding members Gene and Dean Ween continued to make music separately over the course of their five year split until finally reuniting this year.

Ween returned with the announcement of a two-night stint in Broomfield, CO in February 2016. It was unclear at first whether or not this would be a temporary reunion. But the band has continued to headline shows around the country, made their rounds on the festival circuit this past summer and announced the live album release that we are all patiently awaiting. With a handful of upcoming shows still scheduled, the outlook seems positive for the future of Ween.

In the press release announcing GodWeenSatan Live, Dean Ween tells the story of how the album came to be. GodWeenSatan: The Oneness is the band’s first studio album, originally released in 1990. The album was re-released over a decade later on a day that would shake the world’s foundation, September 11, 2001.

“We had planned a show at our local bar, John and Peter’s in New Hope, PA, on September 14 to celebrate the reissue,” Deaner recalls. The band wrestled with the thought of taking the stage that night but ultimately decided that the show must go on. “Remarkably, that night, we were able to conjure up the spirit we had when we originally wrote these songs – some dating back to 1985. I have never heard Gener sing as hard as he did that night. He was screaming, just like he did when we cut the record.” Dean’s words about that night are spine-tingling enough. GodWeenSatan Live immortalizes a monumental night in Ween’s history.
