Merlefest was founded in 1988 by the legendary Doc Watson as a tribute to his son Eddy “Merle” Watson who died in a tragic accident. In Doc’s own words, “When Merle and I started out we called our music ‘traditional plus’, meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play. Since the beginning, the people of the college and I have agreed that the music of MerleFest is ‘traditional plus’.”

The festival will also have a multitude of activities for music lovers of all ages including shops, Little Pickers Family Area, Pickin’ Place, Acoustic Kids Showcases, Jam Camp, Songwriters Coffee House, nature walks and more. There are camping and hotel options in the Wilkesboro area, with shuttle buses running throughout the festival.
