Charlie Hunter’s American Tour ’17: There Used to Be a Nightclub There

Charlie Hunter has the best song titles ever. Everybody else is competing for second place. Consider the title track from his new album, Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth. Or from his last album with drummer Scott Amendola, Not Getting Behind Is the New Getting Ahead. Or the title from Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Are Not Getting Paid.

Or these from Not Getting Behind…

Hunter would be great at standup comedy, except that he is such an exceptional guitarist. And he is taking that great music on the road. The first ten dates of his American Tour ’17 climaxed with two days at the amazing inaugural GroundUP Music Festival in Miami; Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth is on the GroundUP label created by Michael League and his Snarky Puppy juggernaut.

Hunter plays three dates in March, starting with two in NYC at the Rockwood Music Hall on the 8th and 9th. He will also play with his Omaha Diner bandmates March 25 at American Beauty in NYC. Nine dates in the first half of April find him in the East and Midwest, with two Denver shows slated for May.

His current band included Bobby Previte, drums; Curtis Fowlkes, trombone; and Kirk Knuffke, cornet. Omaha Dinner are: Hunter, Previte, Skerik, tenor saxophone and effects, and Steven Bernstein, slide trumpet. Hunter and Skerik were also in the original Garage A Trois with Stanton Moore; they played at last year’s Bear Creek Bayou.
