Great Mix of Electronica, Live Music in Purple Hatter’s Ball Schedule

It’s just a week away, and we are all a-twitter about Purple Hatter’s Ball coming June 2-4 with a pre-party on the first. Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is home to this event for the tenth time in celebration and memory of Rachel Morningstar Hoffman. There is a great mix of electronica and live music throughout the weekend.

THURSDAY

The party starts Thursday with Blackwater Grease, a new name with a lot of familiar faces from S.P.O.R.E. and Jacksonville; they just impressed at Orange Blossom Jamboree. The electronica duo Bells and Robes hit the stage, followed by loopmaster Zach Deputy and finally Rachel’s favorite band, DubConscious.

FRIDAY

Friday’s party starts at 3:30 with one of the park’s best ambassador’s, Vlad the Inhaler, spinning us into Friday’s dance party. Jamtronic excellence pours out next from Lucky Costello, then DubConscious, more funk and electronica from The Russ Liquid Test, and then an electronic trip-hop blowout from Emancipator. All of that is on the Amphitheater Stage.

Up at the Porch Stage, superb punk-ska slammers Trial by Stone open, with Catfish Alliance next and then The Mahal floating their trance-dance-y groove.

SATURDAY

Music begins down at the Beach Stage overlooking the Suwannee River, with sets alternating between DJs and bands. Albert Simpson performs, then funkmeisters The Juanjamon Band and finally Lucider, with DJs Ion Zide, Nick Fresh and Jeff Randall interspersed.

There is a special set at 3 at the Amphitheater in honor of the late Scott Campbell, a much-loved musician who lost his battle with cancer in January. The music is courtesy of The Dead Keys. After that, Mama Margie has her special slot to remind us about her daughter and the importance of Purple Hatter’s and the Morningstar Foundation.

Music continues on the main stage with Zach Deputy, the highly-anticipated return to the park of Perpetual Groove, and a closing set from New Orleans ambassadors Dumpstaphunk.

Meanwhile, on the Porch Stage, the soul-filled Parker Urban Band is up first; they just thrilled at Backwoods Fam Jam. Then more electronic greatness comes in the form of MZG, and, finally, many will get an answer to that time-honored question: WHAT THE FUCK IS ZOOGMA?

SUNDAY

The day’s music schedule all takes place at the beach, with Booty Boo up first. Then expect rockin’ funkin’ reggae from Universal Green, followed by The Brothers Kulishevskiy (Leo and Vlad). That should be a blast. Another of Suwannee’s favorite sons, Roosevelt Collier, closes down the music portion with yet another Super Jam.

Would you trust this man? WE certainly would! Thanks, Paul!

And you’re still not done. Join the Purple Hatter’s crew for a pot-luck dinner — bring a dish or make a donation to the Morningstar Foundation.
