Back To The Future With Jaden Carlson Band’s New Release, “Keep It Movin'”

One listen of the Jaden Carlson Band’s new album, Keep It Movin’, leaves little doubt that the future of electro, funk, and jam are in good hands. Set to be released on May 4, the album follows 2014’s Polychromatic and marks an evolution in style that fuses dance, jazz and funk into one dazzling jamscape. It’s a sound that has been forged by raw talent, hard work, and improvisation on stages in and around the band’s home state of Colorado.

Fronted by Jaden Carlson, a teenaged phenom on the guitar who also plays synthesizer, sings, produces and composes, the quartet includes Eric Imbrosciano on drums, Chris Beck on synth and keyboards, and Fred Reisen on bass. Together they deliver a soundscape on Keep It Movin’ that dips into the dance/fusion grooves popular in the eighties and is reminiscent of the electro-style of George Duke.

The party gets started nice and easy with the space jams of “Last Chair,” the opening track, where Jaden layers sweet vocals over synth and masterful guitar work. The album closes with the soaring “First Chair,” where the band matches her guitar wizardry with an electro-pop explosion of keyboards, synthesizer, and a killer rhythm section that demands you get up and dance.

In between, each band member gets to stretch their wings on instrumentals ripe with syncopated beats with nary a dull moment to be had, including on “Outer Lands,” where Adam Deitch of Lettuce and Break Science contributed his drum magic.

The album is another leap forward in a remarkable career for Jaden that started when she was just six years old and has included sitting in with jam and funk greats like Umphrey’s McGee and Lettuce. The Jaden Carlson Band has also played support for big names like The Robert Randolph and the Family Band, The Revivalists and Kung Fu and has appeared at hugely popular festivals including Suwannee Hulaween and Summer Camp.

As for this latest work, Jaden said she is particularly proud of the quartet’s progress as a band. “This album is a great insight into the new material we’ve been working on and our cohesiveness as a unit,” she said.

Produced by Denver’s Tira Neal and co-produced by Jaden and Chris Beck, Keep It Movin’ is her fifth record and a departure from her previous works, she said. “This album is different in that it’s more produced, more thought out, and we had a very specific goal in mind for each song when we went into the studio,” said Jaden. “Combined with our new and evolving sound, we were able to attain what we envisioned for each song much more easily.”
