The Flaming Lips Share a New Song and Announce Tour Dates!
The Flaming Lips have announced that their thirteenth studio album, Oczy Mlody, will be released on January 13. Yesterday the news continued to roll in with the release of their latest video and single, as well as 2017 tour dates.
The Lips’ new song, “The Castle,” recalls the airy, ethereal sound that the band had begun to stray from in recent years. It immediately conjures up Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots nostalgia, which is sure to delight some longtime Lips fans. The vocals float among dreamy guitar and synth sounds, and Wayne Coyne seems to be lost in a fantasy, as he gushes: “Her eyes were butterflies, her smile was a rainbow.”
Coyne appeared live on Facebook to discuss the single and what we can expect in the coming months. The singer endearingly explains his inexperience with Facebook live and teaches us how to pronounce the new album title. (It’s Ox-ee Mel-OH-dee, incase you were wondering.) He also acquaints us with the sole star of the sweet and simple new video, Malia Ward, a blonde surfer chick whom he met at a Drake concert. Coyne namedrops his BFF and recent collaborative partner Miley Cyrus a few times and announces that we can expect to hear another song from Oczy Mlody in about a month.
