Brookladelphia Hosts Anniversary Tribute Show to Phish’s Album, Billy Breathes

Phish‘s album, Billy Breathes was released in 1996 and is known as their most popular album to date. Brookladelphia, a company bridging events the Brooklyn-Philadelphia areas, hosted an anniversary party to celebrate the release of this album twenty years later. The show was held at the legendary Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg and certainly did not disappoint.

The show consisted of six bands from different parts of New York, who came together to do their own rendition of the classic songs from this album. Each band chose two songs from the album, plus some of their own original tracks weaved throughout, which makes for a really interesting experience. It’s like a Phish show, plus some unexpected bonus tracks!

The Brooklyn based, ukulele loving, funk-jam group Cousin Earth opened the show with Free and Character Zero. Cousin Earth is gaining momentum in the Brooklyn music scene thanks to their unique flavor that provides listeners with a fresh, fun, and funky sound. Take a listen to the show opener and Cousin Earth‘s version of the ever-popular, Free.

Next up was Bad Faces who performed Waste and Taste off the Billy Breathes album. This Brooklyn based band has a rock and blues vibe, with a taste of psychedelic sounds. The photos below were taken by Filip Zalewski of Essnce Photography at Brooklyn Bowl. Bad Faces

Teddy Midnight rolled out their version of Cars Trucks Buses, and Talk. Fresh off their new album release Velvet Blue, Teddy Midnight demanded attention from the room with their original tracks and got the dance floor moving. One reason to check them out; they create electronic dance music through a live band. This is another group getting well deserved admiration in the Brooklyn music scene.

The breakout performance of the evening goes to Escaper. This band came out heavy hitting with an original track and changed the pace of the show with Theme from the Bottom followed by Train Song. Escaper leads you through a musical journey as the instrumentation captures highly deserved attention. The synergy of the group is best showcased during their live show, so don’t miss them next time they’re near you.

Jimkata, hailing from Ithaca played Bliss and the title song, Billy Breathes. This trio has already made a splash in the scene and proved to hold up to the hype. Jimkata had an impressive light show during their set and in my opinion, there’s not a better band to have played the title track for this special evening.

Brookladelphia certainly knew how to end the night on a good note when Aqueous from Buffalo, NY closed out the night. Deservingly so, Aqueous played the last three songs off the album including Swept Away, Steep, and a beautifully transcendent version of Prince Caspian. They gave fans more than they asked for and left us singing Prince Caspian all the way home. Bravo!

We spoke with Brookladelphia founders Dani Mari and Will Hanza who said there will be more tribute shows in the near future. Until then, we hold these very special events near to our hearts and reminisce in the afterglow from this special night.
