Papadosio and Consider the Source at Brooklyn Bowl

The week ending November 11th was a long and dreary one for many in the NY area. Post-election results and protest marches in Manhattan left loads of denizens in uncertainty and exhaustion from either sadness or rage. So when Papadosio scheduled a two-night run at Brooklyn Bowl for the tired and distraught, you best believe they were nights of uplifting jams and well-needed surprises.20161112-dsc00426-2The Friday night escapades kicked off with opener Consider The Source powering through an all-instrumental electro-jam set of Radiohead covers, pulling tracks from OK Computer, Amnesiac, and (most appropriately) Hail to The Thief, filled with finger-tapping bass lines and doubleneck guitar riffs that turned themselves into saxophone, piano, and sitar replicants among the three-piece band, dropping jaws and defying expectations of how a band should open for the likes of Papadosio.

As they opened their set with “By the Light of the Stars,” Papadosio toured through their entire catalog, hopping between dance jams and ethereal synth tunes, coasting just above the surface of consciousness, keeping everyone on their feet without having to get boisterous. Though this was a good start to their overall set, it became worrisome that the steadiness would continue, letting the show end on a dreary note, almost convinced Consider The Source would end up stealing the show.

But as the second half of Papadosio’s set blew open with the funky “Threes,” it was clear they were just getting started. That first hour was the drift away from reality; the second hour was the ethereal dance party. Papadosio got heavier in sound and stayed there, sounding off so infectiously that no one could bear to stand still. The band powered through all the way up to the extensive jam “Paradigm Shift,” closing out on a stronger foot from where they started.

As the night got on with its groove, it was clear that Papadosio knew the importance of playing to their crowd this week. They eased their way into the livelihood of their audience and let them feel the music rather than play directly to them from the stage. That transparency was more important in a post-election NY than it could ever be, and Papadosio truly delivered on the diversity of their sound.
