Moon Hooch: Indescribably Delicious!

If you have been on the jam scene for a while, you know there are certain groups who defy description, almost, anyway. Think The Dead Kenny Gs, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Opposite Box, Telekinetic Walrus, Captain Beefheart, The Bath Salt Zombies, Justin Bieber, The Mike Dillon Band, Hoots and Hellmouth, and… you get the idea.

Moon Hooch belongs in that category. If you’ve seen them, try to put what they do in words. If you haven’t, try asking one of your friends who has. The word unique is an absolute modifier: who cannot be somewhat unique, in the same way that you cannot be kind of pregnant, or rather dead. You are… or you aren’t.

Moon Hooch is unique. They are the perfect mashup of a rock power trio and a saxophone quartet. Drummer James Muschler drives the engine that propels the music at a manic pace; he reminds you of Ginger Baker. And then there are the two boys with all their toys: Wenzl McGowen (Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Contrabass Clarinet, Tubes, EWI) and Mike Wilbur (Tenor Saxophone, Vocals, Synth).

They have been touring relentlessly and have played lots of club dates and festivals as well. A third album is in the works and should be released later this spring. Moon Hooch will be playing shows up and down the East Coast with the likes of Deep Banana Blackout, JJ Grey & Mofro, Galactic, New Mastersounds, and Dopapod.moon cave

Their tour continues tonight (February 24) in Washington DC. They will be working up and down the East Coast and into the Midwest, and the tour includes a stop at the Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival; lots more summer festivals TBA.

Having difficulty imagining dancing your arse off to a pair of saxophones?

You have no idea!
