Joe Marcinek in Florida? Again? Who Woulda Thunk It?

Joe Marcinek did it again. He planned another stealth tour of Florida; this time, he’s bringing a couple of Chicago buddies with him — Marvin Little and Rick King — in addition to Holly Bowling and Juanjamon. They have five Florida dates on the schedule, the first of which was last night (Tuesday, May 31) at the Red Lion Pub in Winter Park.

Indiana native Marcinek must love Florida, because this is his fourth trip (at least) since last October. The last one, in April, included a superb set at the Wanee Music Festival. Marcinek is a magnet for awesome talent — superstars and stars in the making — clamoring to join him for some funky, funky fun. Marcinek plays a mean guitar and is a fine vocalist as well.

Miss Holly Bowling is the keyboard extraordinaire from San Francisco well know for covering myriad Phish tunes and the Dead as well. At the close of her tour last week, she also threw in covers of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Cat Stevens. She was part of Marcinek’s April troupe.

Juanjamon has played all of these Florida shows with Marcinek. An accomplished bass and keyboard player, with this band Juanjamon plays tenor saxophone and EWI and adds backing vocals. He was for years a member of CopE, one of Florida’s first and best jambands. Currently, he leads the Juanjamon Band, with “funk so wide, you can’t get around it, so low, you can’t get under it.”

If you come from Chicago, chances are you have blues in your soul. Marvin Little is a great bass player who has played with The Trippin’ Billies and currently with Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues (Branch is currently in the running for a Chicago blues award).

Rick King played drums previously with the legendary Koko Taylor. He has also performed with Giles Corey’s Stone Soul (Little did, also) and Lubriphonic, a tremendous band with Corey and Ron Haynes (check out their album Soul Solution).

Dave McSweeney, bass player for Greenhouse Lounge (currently on hiatus), will join in the fun Saturday night at The Roof. Thanks to Brotherly Love Productions for their help with this tour!
