NoNeed Set for Release of ‘The Beginning’
NoNeed, the reggae/rock/fusion quintet from Tampa, are excited to release their excellent new EP, The Beginning, their first new recording since 2013’s All That We Are. In that time, NoNeed have been delighting fans with their energetic, positive vibe, with the key on fusion: ska, rocksteady, reggae and rock.
NoNeed are: Sebastian Tenorio, vocals, guitar; James Harnage, vocals, guitar; Kevin Blume, drums, vocals; Cody Moore, sax, keyboards, vocals; and Ryan Weiss, bass.
The group unveiled all of the tunes last week on WMNF’s live program Musicians Wanted. The EP release party is Saturday, July 23, at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg. Along for the ride will be three other like-minded bands: UNRB, Summer Survivors, and Seranation.
The Beginning is five tracks of deliciousness, superbly recorded. You’re going to want these songs for your very own.
It starts, naturally, with “The Beginning.” Moore’s organ washes over the twin guitars, bass and drums dictating the pace. The harmony vocals are excellent here. “When I listen to those voices in my head, I always go back to the start again.”
Piano and vocal introduce “Story of My Life,” kicked into gear with perfect reggae drums. The vocal harmonies are once again great. In spite of tales of woe: “Life is good; I’m alright.” Moore follows up with an excellent tenor sax solo.
On some albums, bands are often not sure how to end tunes. That is NOT the case here, each tune coming to a great conclusion.
“Stars” barely qualifies as ska-ish. It is a beautiful ballad: “Reach for the stars. It doesn’t really matter how far you are.” Chunky guitars and beautiful piano carry the tune, along with a lovely sax solo from Moore.
The reggae is strong with “Wild and Crazy Nights,” announced with guitar and powerful beat: “These have been the best days of our lives.” The vocals yield to an echo-y, trip slowed-up section that is magic. Moore plays both piano and organ, and Weiss and Blume again set the cruise control.
“Sunshine” opens with piano and clever lyrics, sung with great expression. “Oh, baby, I’m not foolin’. I set my sights ’cause she’s the one I’m pursuin’.” The piano yields at the end to tremendous flamenco-style guitar.
