Bokanté = Exchange

International musical sensation Bokanté begins a eleven-date European run this Wednesday (January 23rd) in Stockholm. This tour will also find the band in Norway and Switzerland before six shows in the U.K.

Bokanté is the brainchild of Michael League, who also gave birth to another international sensation, Snarky Puppy, as well as GroundUp Records and the GroundUp Music Festival. Bokanté will perform at GroundUp as well. They offer this explanation of the group’s name:

The word bokanté means “exchange” in Creole, the language of vocalist Malika Tirolien’s youth growing up on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Now living in Montreal, she stands among 8 musicians from 4 continents, each one accomplished in their own right and well versed in music far beyond that of their point of origin.

Bokanté are: Malika Tirolien, vocals; Jamey Haddad, percussion; Keita Ogawa, percussion; André Ferrari, percussion; Roosevelt Collier, lap and pedal steel guitars; Bob Lanzetti, guitar; Chris McQueen, guitar; and Michael League, baritone guitar & bass. The group released the follow-up to their first album, Strange Circles, last fall. What Heat was recorded with the Metropole Orchestra.
