Amazing New EP from Joe Marcinek: ‘Evergroove’

Some time about nine years ago, I noted that there was an artist scheduled for Dunedin Brewery. I penned an article titled “Who is Joe Marcinek, and Why is He Playing Dunedin Brewery?” Then I went to the show… and promptly found out exactly who and why. Since then, I have seen him perform dozens upon dozens of times with amazing A-lister lineups, at concerts and festivals and on Jam Cruise. In fact, I was contemplating writing an article about “Six Degrees of Joe Marcinek,” but then I saw I had already written it — in 2016! (Read it here.)

At the time I first saw him, he was about to release his second album, Slink, following his 2012 debut Both Sides. Slink (2016) was brilliant, and so were the albums that followed: JMIII (2018), JMB4 (2021), Joe Marcinek Band 5 (2022), Solo Guitar (2022), and Dead Funk Summit (2023).

The new EP from Marcinek, Evergroove, was issued at the end of October, and the three tracks and 24 minutes of music are — spectacular. The setting is an organ trio, with Hammond B3 monster Tommy Shugart and Jason Hann (The String Cheese Incident) on drums. The interplay among the three is breathtaking.

About the album, Marcinek told us:

The Evergroove EP was recorded in October of 2022 at the Evergroove Studios in Colorado with Jason Hann on drums and Tommy Shugart on B3! All tunes were written by me. It was mixed by Alan Evans and mastered by Brad Smalling. The album was released on Vintage League Records.

All of Marcinek’s albums are jazzy, and this new EP certainly qualifies. We will let the music speak for itself with three YouTube videos.

Next up for Marcinek and friends is the four-night Dunedin Brewery takeover January 4-7! Thursday features Brain Emoji with Marcinek, Michael Lyn Bryant, Vinnie Svoboda, and Tucker Sody. Friday the Marcinek band includes Freekbass, Jason Hann (The String Cheese Incident), Michael Garrie, and Austin Llewellyn. Hann will also present his League of Sound Disciples. Saturday the Marcinek band adds vocalist Songbird Shella, and there will also be Freekbass solo grooves! Sunday event TBA.

Marcinek heads to California for three nights, joined by Manny and Ronnie Sanchez of GrooveSession and by vocalist Reilly Comisar. They will hit Nevada City, San Francisco, and Cotati. There is also a Key West date in February, with more sure to come.

There is a huge event March 30 at Crazy Uncle Mike’s in Boca Raton: Coach’s All-Star Jam, a benefit to crush kidney cancer. There will be a headliner announced, and the other band features Marcinek, Dave Watts (The Motet), Timothy Ola, Digo Rodriguez (Electric Kif), three members of The Heavy Pets: Jeff Lloyd, Mike Garulli, and Jim Wuest; Jessica Jones, Chris Sgammato, Juanjamon, Rob Smiley, and more!

He reconvenes Dead Funk Summit at Skull and Roses with compatriots Melvin Seals (Melvin Seals and JGB), Tony Hall (Dumpstaphunk), Stanton Moore (Galactic), and Jason Hann. The Marcinek Band with Hann are also slated for the inaugural Jamboozled Music & Arts Festival in September.
