JJ Grey and Mofro at the Heartwood Soundstage

JJ Grey said it felt like home. Playing to a sold-out crowd at the outdoor stage at Heartwood Soundstage, it was clear that Grey and his band Mofro were glad to be playing close to their home base in Jacksonville. From their beginnings in the early ’90s,  their sound blends Southern rock, blues, soul, funk, gospel, and a distinct “swampy” feel rooted in Florida’s landscapes and culture. You’ll often hear lyrics about small towns, rivers, hard work, family, and the beauty and struggles of the Deep South. Grey’s voice and on-stage intensity are a huge part of their identity—raw, soulful, and lots of character.

After a strong opening set by Harber Wynn, the setlist was a journey through fan favorites and deep cuts alike.  “Everything is a Song” and “Top of the World” provided lots of energy, while the swampy groove of “Olustee” and the soulful pulse of “Blackwater” resonated with fans familiar with the band’s Florida roots. When the unmistakable chords of “Lochloosa” started, the audience cheered, singing every word like a hometown anthem.  And it wasn’t just true of that one song; at one point Grey noted that he didn’t really need to sing as he encouraged the crowd to finish a number of verses.. and they were up to the task.

Mofro is an exciting collection of top-flight musicians: a three-piece horn section, backup singers, and solid rhythm section.  They also clearly love interacting with each other and the crowd and Grey.

Some of the additional high points of the night included a great cover of John Anderson’s “Seminole Wind,” the funky “Florabama,” guitarist Pete Winders’ blazing solo on “Olustee,” and the emotional “This River.”

This was the largest crowd I’ve seen at Heartwood, and they got what they came for… a gathering of fellow fans and some shared music they love.  JJ Grey and Mofro are in the middle of a national tour as listed below. And it’s likely they’ll sell out, so get your tickets early. Thanks to Heartwood Soundstage for bringing this great band to Gainesville.
