Nigel Hall Unleashes Vibrant New Single “Do It On My Dime”

Grammy-winning keyboardist, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, Nigel Hall opens up a fresh creative front with the release of his new single “Do It On My Dime,” an exhilarating tour-de-force and the first track off his forthcoming album Phoenix.

“Do It On A Dime” joins a growing body of work chronicling Hall’s evolution as an artist and human being. Best known as keyboardist and vocalist for funk/fusion cosmonauts Lettuce, Hall draws from a deep well of personal experience and boundless talent to craft compelling solo projects such as 2021’s Spiritual, the prologue to Phoenix and an intimate portrait of a man struggling with his own personal demons. The much-anticipated album and “Do It On My Dime” embody the hard-fought emergence of a man and musician coming into his own power. Throwing off the things that once held him back, Hall is having the time of his life with “Do It On My Dime” kicking open the door to a new chapter while looking back at the moments that shaped his life with clarity, humility and humor.

“The song is about a wild f**kin’ night,” Hall explained. “I had a lot of fun. I’m smiling as a talk about it. This is a song about a night of no regrets.”

To bring “Do It On My Dime” to life, Hall enlisted the talents of friends and accomplished musicians including prolific drummer and producer Charles Haynes (Meshell Ndegeocello, Marcus Strickland, Ruthie Foster, Marcus Miller); Grammy-winning guitarist, composer and producer Ella Feingold (Erykah Badu, Bruno Mars, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z); New Orleans jazz saxophonist Aaron Narcisse, and supreme vocalists Natasha Pearce and Chloe Dementria.

As with all his work, Hall’s soulful vocals take front and center on the song along with his consummate skill on keys. But fans might be surprised to learn he is equally masterful on bass opening the tune with beefy beats. Listen to “Do It On My Dime” below.

Co-written with multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer and good friend Kelli Strawbridge, “Do It On My Dime,” was recorded and produced by Hall at Blue Dream Studios in Los Angeles, CA, a city close to Hall’s heart that inspires and informs his music.

“You know, I have a love affair with regions of music,” he said. There’s a certain region of music that really touches my soul and my heart when I hear it. For instance, my love for Philadelphia. I’ve talked over and over how much I love Philadelphia.

With all of my records, they have that same kind of theme. My first record, Ladies & Gentlemen was a New York record. Spiritual was my DMV (Richmond) record. Burning Bush kind of was too.  And Phoenix is gonna be my L.A. record. When I think about how I want the world to hear them, I’m thinking about where the album is gonna end at, meaning, you know, where all the real work gets done.

I know that I’m gonna wanna mix this, for example, at Blue Dream. So, I’m gonna give as much of that L.A. inspiration that I have. And when I say L.A. inspiration, I mean Quincy Jones and I mean him only. I’m not talking about nobody else in L.A. but Quincy Jones. Like I want that kind of shine on this record.”

While still being mixed and mastered, Phoenix features contributions by  Grammy-winning horn player, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Nicholas Payton, genre-busting, guitarist and singer Grant Garland, guitar phenom Morgan Burrs of Butcher Brown and singer/songwriter Renee Gros.

Issued via Hall’s imprint Nigeco Music,  “Do It On My Dime” is currently available across all digital platforms with more releases expected from Phoenix in the near future.
