Fox Fam Jam… with the stress on FAMily… April 10–12
The Tampa Bay area regularly sports an embarrassment of riches when it comes to music, and the weekend of April 10–12 is absolutely overflowing with options. Two things. First, what ever you pick, don’t you dare sit home. Get out and support live music. Second, check out this inaugural bay area family gathering at Florida Sand Music Ranch in Brooksville. Fox Fam Jam is accurate, offering 17 great bands and performers playing in the intimate confines of that lovely site.
Great thanks to Laser Fox and other like-minded members of our community for curating such a superb new event. You know the drill: drive in and stay put, engage with friends new and old from the area and beyond, and get ready for outstanding music on two stages side by side. There will be great activities as well, and we will post more about them soon, but let’s dive into the lineup.

FRIDAY, APRIL 10
Psychedelic spacemen Sauce Pocket are based in Jacksonville but spend plenty of time throwing down killer shows in the Tampa area. They are fixtures at Florida Sand Music Ranch (FSMR) fests including Sunshine Get Down, Sunshine Hootenanny, and Whippersnap Music & Arts Festival.

The band is anchored by Taylor Ivey and Riley O’Brien (bass and drums), with Steven Rose on guitar, Kyle Sareyani on keyboards, guitar, and flute, and Matt Horhorta on tenor saxophone. They regularly publish live recordings of their amazing jazz fusion and funky prog.

Among the most enduring bands on the scene are The Applebutter Express, whose folk and bluegrass offerings are chock full of unexpected covers, double-entendre lyrics, and joy. They too have graced almost every fest in our area with their patented Uncut Ukulele Funk.

At the heart of the group are Shannon and Kyle Biss; they both sing, and Kyle mans the mandolin. They are joined by the extraordinary talents of Jason Baker on fiddle and Zach Rogers on bass. It is impossible not to smile when they are on stage.

Wall of Echoes have been performing since 2003, the longest continuously performing Pink Floyd tribute band in Florida. They have rocked out in the pavilion before; it will be exciting to have them back.

Space Krate is a family-powered musical collective dedicated to transforming the sounds of our planet into a unified cosmic experience, blending elements of funk, soul, reggae, rock, jam, and groove-driven improvisation. Space Krate’s sound is built on the idea that music is a universal language. Each performance becomes a launch sequence: Earth-born rhythms and melodies are fused together, sealed inside the metaphorical “Space Krate,” and sent outward into the cosmos with one mission — to see if the universe answers back on the dance floor.

The band features Este Loves on vocals and acoustic guitar, Carly Love on vocals and keyboards, Ben Luchka on electric guitar, Dave Gerulat on drums, and Juanjamon on keyboard bass, keyboards, vocals, and saxophone.
SATURDAY, APRIL 11
We claim that Tire Fire represent the real Florida-Georgia line with great talent on either side. The band features superb original compositions and some dazzling covers (“Bombs Over Bagdad,” anyone?).

Trey Miller fronts this great group on banjo and harp. Everybody sings! Dave Gerulat adds that extra oomph on drums. The strings include Sean Hartley, bass; Dani Jaye, fiddle; Arrie Bozeman, mandolin; and Justin Davis, guitar.

Almost ten years ago, a killer rock trio sprung up from the Jacksonville area, and they played regularly around the state. As it often does, life happens, and the members of Custard Pie went their separate ways. We are so looking forward to seeing them back together.

The OG! Rory Joseph, guitar, vocals; Aaron Webb, bass; and Brandon Howell, drums. OMG!

Somewhere in the eternal vastness of space and time, somewhere upon a westward wind, there is a point where Gypsy Punk, Jam Band, and New Grass collide with cosmic force. That point is Ponder the Albatross.

The “Ponder Phenomenon” is given its drive and force by Josh Bower‘s ecstatic mandolin, guitar and vocals, Luke Lindholm‘s searing fiddle; ably abetted by Eric Vrtis‘ whisking wave of bass & vocals and Nick Bower‘s symphonic symmetry on the drums.

We are still learning about The Low Heavies, who had a fine set at Whippersnap in February. The Low Heavies are a funky, soulful, groove machine based out of Tampa, formed in 2019 when a group of seasoned musicians, transplants from all over the country, expressed a mutual love for all things funky.

The Low Heavies are: Eric, lead vocals, guitar; Chris, drums; Fabian, percussion, congestion; Terry, keyboards; and Jeff, bass.
A spring festival at FSMR just wouldn’t be right without Turner Moore and the band he plays in, Ship of Fools. Based in Sarasota, Ship of Fools formed in 2012 to share their love of the Grateful Dead. Influenced by a range of classic rock, Americana, Southern rock, bluegrass, blues, and jazz, the band plays in an improvisational style with unique medleys and often extended jams.

Members include Nate Howell, Jeremy Egglefield, Michael Garrie, Michael Hoffman, Turner Moore, and Kara Nally.
