“Africa” by Toto was an absolute hit when it was originally released in 1982, over 35 years ago. It was all over the Billboard Top 100 and even reached the coveted #1 spot on February 5th, 1983. As years passed, it remained a beloved song, but not until recently did it pop back up into mainstream culture. Thanks to the internet and memes, the song came back with a vengeance; even Weezer released a cover of the song which also reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100.

Through the years there have been countless covers of this classic track, but no matter how many I hear one stands out far above the rest. Two guys, one with an acoustic guitar the other with a bass, pumped such an unprecedented amount of love and adoration into the song. Mike Masse’ and Jeff Hall had covered this song many times for small crowds and coffee shops. Once again, thanks to the internet, they have shared their amazing cover with the rest of the world.
This was shared on YouTube nearly a decade ago and still remains one of my favorite all-time covers of any song. In my opinion, they have the best version of “Africa” ever recorded, even better than Toto’s original. Take a listen below and just wait for that chorus. It gives me chills every time.
