Rooster Walk Music & Arts Festival Ready to Soar

The eleventh annual Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival (RW) is more than just a festival, it is a celebration of the bonds of friendship and music. Held at the Pop’s Farm campground in the rolling hills of Martinsville, Virginia, the RW festival kicks off May 23-26.

Born out of the loss of Martinsville High School alumni Edwin ‘the Rooster” Penn in 2007 and Walker Shank in 2008, the festival “celebrates life and the notion that you shouldn’t waste a moment of it.” Over the past decade, the Rooster Walk festival has raised over $175,000 in funds to support the Penn-Shank Memorial Scholarship as well as providing financial grants for musical instruments and supplies to local public schools.

The lineup is stacked with heavy hitters like Sam Bush Band, Galactic, Billy Strings, Sierra Hull, The Marcus King Band, Shovels and Rope, Steep Canyon Rangers, and many more. There will be stellar sets that showcase bands from across the roots family tree, including bluegrass, funk, jam, Americana and beyond.

Food, Fun and the Great Outdoors

The RW festival will also have a ton of activities for the entire family, including opportunities to explore the back-country while you are there. From mountain bike trips, hiking, Kids’ Coop activities, Gear Grove expeditions, Disc Golf, and more, there will be plenty of fun activities to keep you and the little ones happy. Take a stroll through the vendors for some tasty food and beverages, local arts and crafts, and festival merchandise. Yes, there will be beer for sale, with several craft breweries on site offering a variety of local brews.

Camping, Parking and Hotel Options

The general admission tickets include camping but do not include parking, so be prepared if you want to park on site. There are a few options for parking near or at camp,  but you should go ahead and purchase any upgrades since they are going fast. If you are not into camping, there are several area hotels that have partnered with the festival, offering discounts and free shuttles to the festival grounds throughout the weekend. Book those soon or you may miss out.
