Camp Anarchy Must-See Undercard Acts

Article by Maria Cardillo

Camp Anarchy returns to Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio, from May 31 – June 2. This three-day punk rock music campout is here to help you release any tension you may have in one of my favorite Ohio venues. If you’re craving some rapid vocals, loud guitar, and breakout mosh pits, this is the place to be. Being somewhat of an outsider to the world of punk rock, I am eager to witness the excitement of the dedicated fans to what seems like such a lost genre.

As I dove into the lineup, I discovered that most of these bands got their start in the early ’90s, when hardcore punk and ska bands were thriving. Despite the changing of the times, the music and culture still seem to entice the young and old by the core message of refusing to conform. I’m sure many of the punk camp attendees are driving into rage with bigger names such as The Offspring, Rancid, Pennywise, and NOFX, but the undercard sparks my interest the most.

The Suicide Machines

My number-one band to look out for this weekend is The Suicide Machines. Though originally from Detroit, they create a fast, West Coast sound that makes me want to jump around and get pushed around by a bunch of sweaty strangers in the pit.

Iron Chic

Next up on my list is Iron Chic, a band from New York with shouting vocals to take you back to your angsty teenage years and fast, dominant drumming to bop your head to.

Voodoo Glow Skulls

Voodoo Glow Skulls was a band I was familiar with before diving into the lineup a bit. I was immediately hooked by their horn section and goofy punk spirit. Formed in the late ’80s, they were deemed one of the most interesting ska bands on the West Coast by the ’90s, so I will be curious to see the turnout, as they are first to take the stage Saturday afternoon.

Camp Anarchy 2019

Overall, I’m excited to enter into this hardcore world of punk and gain a better appreciation for the music and the culture, because at the end of the day we all just want to rage against the system and say suck it to the man, right?  Festival hours are 5:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 1:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, and 1:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. Tickets as well as camping passes are still available for Camp Anarchy. I hope to rage with you there!
