Tampa’s Second Pop-Up Jazz Club with Gumbi Ortiz, Fred Johnson & Michael Ross

Three of the Tampa Bay area’s most important and prominent jazz musicians combine forces Friday, June 28, for Tampa’s Second Pop-Up Jazz Club at the Pussycat Lounge in Ybor City. You’ll hear amazing music for a wonderful cause.

This show is a fund-raiser, with net proceeds benefitting Steps Forward, a 501c3 housing the chronically homeless. Doors open at 7:30, and music begins at 8:30.

Vocalist Fred Johnson performs regularly the bass player Michael Ross. Both of them have been mainstays on the local jazz scene for more than 40 years. Johnson works with the Straz Center and has been a life force for positive change in numerous endeavors. Many jazz fans may have caught Johnson with the Ross Trio at a Tampa Jazz Club event last year. The Ross Trio for Friday includes the superb James Suggs on trumpet and a keyboard player Ross promises will knock us out, Liston Gregory III.

Gumbi Ortiz likewise has been a musical fixture for more than 40 years. His incredible percussion and always-smiling face have been part of Al di Meola’s electric band for most of that time, and he plays with The Black Honkeys and with his band The Electrik Rendezvous. His band New Groove City are part of this special night. Ortiz on congas will be joined by Luis Alicea, drums; Elias Tona, bass; Butch Thomas, saxophone; Aron Ferrer, piano; and vocalist Marino Zayas.

Great music for a great cause. This will be one remarkable night with Gumbi Ortiz, Fred Johnson, Michael Ross, and their respective bandmates.
