Six We’re Looking Forward to at Suwannee Hulaween

You do the math. 97 sets this week at Suwannee Hulaween, not counting silent disco or Hula for a Cause. How many you try to catch is up to you, but you won’t get to hear half the music.

With that in mind, we’d like to recommend six sets you may or may not have considered this week.

SPACE KADET

Thursday is a good day to search out some “electronic psychedelic space funk” you may not have encountered before. This Atlanta trio dazzles and will have you dancin’ and groovin’. Space Kadet are: Alex Etheridge, bass/synth/production; Rohan Prakash, drums/samples; and Thomas Garret, guitar. THURSDAY CAMPGROUND 9:15-10:30

TAUK

This stunning power quartet have been regular visitors at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, and it will be magical having them back for this year’s celebration of full-frontal fusion. TAUK are: Matt Jalbert, guitar; Charlie Dolan, bass; Alric “A.C.” Carter, keyboards, organ; and Isaac Teel, drums. FRIDAY SPIRIT LAKE 7:45-9:00

LPT

At the inaugural Suwannee Rising last April (and seriously, don’t miss it next year), one of the acts that caught most of us by surprise was LPT, a brilliant Afro-Cuban dance party with a band attached. Guaranteed you’ll dance non-stop. LPT are: Milan Algood, timbales, vocals; Josué A. Cruz, lead vocals; Angel Garcia,  keyboards, vocals; Mike Emmert, baritone sax; Bryant Patterson, trombone; Jonah Pierre, bongo, bell; Stan Piper, bass; Juan Rollan, tenor sax, vocals; JP Salvat, congas; and Steve Strawley, trumpet. SATURDAY CAMPGROUND 4:15-5:15

SHAK NASTI

This astonishing power trio from Orlando twists up a dynamic blend of funk, jazz, and rock, and each member is, simply put, badass. Shak Nasti are: Tim Turner, guitar, vocals; Matt Lapham, bass; and Rion Smith, drums. For this show, they have also invited Syoma Klochko, guitar; and Ito Colon, percussion. SATURDAY CAMPGROUND 8:15-9:45

BILLY STRINGS

We haven’t had the pleasure yet, but everybody who has heard him speaks in reverent tones about his virtuosity and his humility. Billy Strings is the future of jamgrass, and the future couldn’t be in better hands. Billy Strings is joined by Billy Failing, Royal Masat, and Jarrod Walker. SUNDAY THE MEADOW 1:30-2:45

STAR KITCHEN

When Disco Biscuits bass king Marc Brownstein puts together a “side project,” you know it will be a monster. And this one most certainly is. The psychedelic funk pouring out of this band is just ridiculous. The grooves here are deeper than deep! Star Kitchen are: Marc Brownstein, bass; Danny Mayer, guitar; Rob Marscher, keyboards; and Marvin B. Lewis, drums. SUNDAY SPIRIT LAKE 6:45-8:00
