Dunedin Brewery Oktobeerfest: Photo Gallery in the Beer Garden!
We were only able to catch Saturday night’s festivities at Dunedin Brewery Oktobeerfest (October 2–5), but we thank Hunter Bryant for capturing all of the action! And one from Jeff Kelledes! Thanks as well to Marc Foster for his tireless work recording many of these sets (the links to audio on Archive.org are blue)!

Joe Marcinek Band
Marcinek has a habit of assembling bands from coast to coast and getting the absolute most from everyone. For this set he chose Jamie Newitt (The Heavy Pets, Brain Emoji) on drums and two ultra-talented members of Ajeva: Taylor Gilchrist on bass and Lyndon Thacker on keyboards (most notably the Hammond B3 + Leslie donated to Dun Brew by Harv Majeski). It was perfection. And the pub was slammed.
They lit first into tracks from a number of Marcinek’s brilliant albums; favorites “SoulD” and “Funky G Sus.” Thacker was having a blast blending in clavinet and electric piano and a couple of teases; one was “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” Marcinek has a knack for getting really spacey, and the group launched right with him. Thacker led off on piano on “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,” which he also sang, plus more teases.
Then it was time for Songbird Shella to join the fun. First up was “Dear Prudence,” where she soared over B3 before Marcinek took this one outside as well. They offered a bouncy “The Harder They Come” before the tune she and Marcinek co-wrote, “Before I Go.” Danielle Mohr joined Shella for a number they always crush, “Come Together,” which twisted into reggae and then – YES! – more space, with Shella’s vocalese on top. They shut down Oktobeerfest with a joyous take on “I Wish.”

The Lee Boys
The sacred steel tradition flows from Miami in the form of The Lee Boys, who for decades have been melding their spiritual music with incredible dance music. There have been lots of interchangeable parts; in fact, there are two sets of Lee Boys out there now. Alvin Lee is fronting one; this particular lineup featured the one and only Derrick Lee on vocals and current occupant of the steel chair The Professor Frank Owens. We caught three new members, including Derrick Lee Jr. on drums! The Noble brothers were superb: Teione The Sniper on guitar and Monte on bass.
The Moon Tower was packed with people ready to testify with The Lee Boys, including many long-time fans. Everything was right about this performance. Derrick and The Professor both sang throughout the set. There were many highlights, including the Michael Jackson medley, Monte’s solo on “Testify,” and The Professor crushing “Hey Joe” to close.
Most miraculous: seeing the amazing Derrick Lee leading the parade. We had no idea at the time that he had suffered a stroke just a month before! We see you walking right, LeeBoy!

HoneyWhat
The first thing I wrote in my notebook was SO DAMN GOOD! I loved all the music Saturday, but HoneyWhat impressed the most. The quartet is fronted by singer/songwriter Danielle Mohr, who also plays guitar, and the trio behind her are absolutely stellar. They claim to play original rock, pop, and soul, but don’t be fooled; this band kicks major ass, with Sam Adwell (guitar), Timothy Nichols (bass), and the inimitable Andi Tafelski (drums & vocals).
They had the packed pub fully engaged with a superb set, including a couple of fun covers, especially “Everybody Wants to Save the World/Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” The ubiquitous Joe Marcinek jumped in for a tune, and we really weren’t ready to let them go.
