Gov’t Mule’s “Dark Side of The Mule” Set for Dec. 15th Release
The iconic power rock group Gov’t Mule will release their latest album, “Dark Side of The Mule” on Dec. 15th. This live album was recorded on Halloween, 2008, at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre and features covers of Pink Floyd tunes from “Dark Side of The Moon”, “Wish You Were Here”, “Meddle”, and “The Wall”. Mule fans can choose from a standard CD (with only the Pink Floyd covers), a deluxe version (three CD/one DVD package of the entire performance), or a double vinyl version. I’m a longtime Mule fan, so I ordered the deluxe version.
This is the second of three special releases commemorating the band’s 20th anniversary. The band released “Stoned Side of The Mule, Vol. 1” on Nov. 28th, featuring Rolling Stones covers. And in March of next year (release date not yet firm), they’ll release “Dub Side of The Mule”, a collection of reggae songs featuring Toots Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals.
I love a well executed live recording. You get the extended jams and other nuances not found on studio sessions. But a glut of live releases, whether originals or covers, can signal that a band has hit a creative log jam when it comes to new material. What are your thoughts?
