Steve Miller Band to Kickoff 2019 Spring Tour

Legendary rockers Steve Miller Band will celebrate their 51st year in music when they hit the road this spring with a Southeastern tour in the United States before heading off for the full summer tour. This segment is comprised of an eight-stop tour that opens March 12th in Clearwater, Florida, and ends two weeks later with a March 24th set in Southaven, Mississippi.

The spring tour will not feature an opener and is being billed as an “Evening with Steve Miller Band”. As spring turns to summer, the tour continues on June 13 in Des Moines, Iowa and runs through August 31 when the tour ends in Woodinville, Washington.

Steve Miller is one of the most celebrated musicians who emerged in the 60’s as a blues and rock and roll guitarist and vocalist. Miller is best known for his work in the Steve Miller Band which he formed in 1968.

Steven Haworth Miller (born October 5, 1943) credits his mother, Bertha, whom he described as a remarkable jazz-influenced singer, gave him his first exposure to music. His father, George, who was a physician, was a jazz enthusiast and accomplished amateur recording engineer. The family moved to Dallas in 1950, where Miller learned to play guitar from the legendary electric guitar pioneer, Les Paul.

Miller’s first band, The Marksmen, was formed in Texas and was joined by classmate Boz Scaggs. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison at the age of 16, he formed a new band called The Ardells. Scaggs, along with Ben Sidran, joined the short-lived Ardells. Miller would spend the next few years at the university but dropped out of college just six credit hours short of a literature degree.

The Steve Miller Band’s first album, Children of the Future, was released in 1968 and was a favorite in the San Francisco music scene. Their psychedelic blues-inspired style of music continued with the release of several more albums, including Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, and Number 5 that followed.

In the ’70s Miller transitioned into a new style of music that was exciting and irresistable. The pop-rock style of music led to radio play that put the band ahead of its time. 1973’s “The Joker” became a number-one hit in the U.S. and abroad, which eventually led to a steady stream of successful albums over the next 20 years.

The band’s mega-hits include “Take The Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner” and “Jungle Love.” These very hits are what eventually led to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
