Founded in 1985 as a non-profit, Farm Aid is best known for its yearly philanthropic festival. But it works year-round to fulfill its mission of keeping family farmers on their land. It also focuses on building an agricultural system that values family farms, healthy food, soil, and strong communities and advocates for fair farm policies. To date, it has raised $57 million toward those goals.

This is the second time Wisconsin, which bills itself as “America’s Dairyland,” will host Farm Aid. Organizers purposefully chose the state, which has led the country in farm bankruptcies for three straight years, in part to highlight the dairy crisis there.

Farm Aid: A Song For America

A look at Farm Aid's history working to keep family farmers on the land."Farm Aid supports a food system that is democratic, independent, competitive and locally based. This isn't an exercise in nostalgia, it's a commitment to a way of life. These are values worth fighting for." –– Eric SchlosserFarm Aid's mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews host an annual concert to raise funds to support Farm Aid's work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. For over 30 years, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised more than $50 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

“With devastating weather, low prices and harmful farm and trade policies, America’s family farmers are facing immense challenges to hold onto their farms,” said Willie Nelson in a statement. “It’s not right… family farmers are essential for all of us…. At Farm Aid 2019, we’ll highlight solutions and show our support for family farmers’ contributions to our health, economy and environment.”
