“There’s been no good music since the ’60s and ’70s.”

TELL ME YOU HAVEN’T HEARD ANY NEW MUSIC (OTHER THAN TERRESTRIAL RADIO) WITHOUT TELLING ME YOU HAVEN’T HEARD ANY NEW MUSIC:

“There’s just something comforting about the music from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. Those songs knew how to tell a story, soothe the heart, or lift a mood in a way today’s music rarely can.”

“Today’s music for me is just noise.”

“people who love good music not like modern stuff where the woman sound liken sounds like they caught there finger in the wringer and men sound like they are about to die.”

“Proper music in a period when groups and singers worked hard to get recognition for their talent.”

“It’s the original instruments that the lyrics that separates the music of today which is mostly triptronics than the original instruments and lyrics.”

“If you want great music the these are the eras to listen too.”

“at least you can hear the lyrics and sing along.”

“na days its just bang bang bass bass”

“So much modern music is discordant and irritating before you get to the lyrics.”

“Only music worth listening to.”

“The best years of real music.”

“Sure beats the junk they have now.”

“That’s the time period when real music was made!”

The above is just a sampling of comments from assorted Facebook pages extolling the wonders of their favorite decades while denigrating music they’ve actually never heard. You’ve all heard them, over and over. This is so sad: widespread ignorance and/or unawareness that there is a real world out there beyond your personal bubble.

We know that, beyond the wasteland of commercial radio, there are millions upon millions of amazing musicians creating fabulous music on a daily basis. The range of genres is mind-blowing. There are websites and cruises and festivals for a wide variety of styles. There is great music of every type. There is something for EVERYONE out there, but they have to LOOK FIRST beyond the wasteland of most commercial radio.

YOUR MISSION, should you decide to accept it: when remarks like these come up in conversation, mention websites, online community radio stations, satellite radio channels, YouTube groups, bandcamp favorites, Spotify playlists, and any other suggestions you have to help them expand their horizons. You WILL hit many dead ends, this we know, but you WILL also have successes. Celebrate those. Share your music far and wide. The musicians we love are counting on you.
