Riot Fest 2026: Rain, Mud & Absolute Mayhem

Riot Fest returned to Chicago’s Douglass Park this year with three things guaranteed: an absurdly stacked lineup, enough nostalgia to make your high school self emotional, and weather that apparently had a personal vendetta against festivalgoers.

For three days, fans descended on the park for punk, emo, metal, ska, goth, and whatever wonderfully unhinged category William Shatner’s heavy-metal era belongs to. And then came the rain. So. Much. Rain. By Sunday, Douglass Park had gone from music festival to full-contact mud sport, with shoes disappearing into the sludge and attendees developing survival strategies that would make Bear Grylls nervous.

Thankfully, the music was worth the wet socks.

Friday brought a nostalgia overload with The All-American Rejects, Motion City Soundtrack, Thrice, Iggy Pop, and 3OH!3, proving that some bands really can transport you straight back to the era of AIM away messages and questionable fashion choices. Saturday went considerably heavier, with Thrice, Gogol Bordello, Frankie & The Witch Fingers, and a solid Tool set reminding everyone that sometimes what you really need is to stand in the rain listening to seven-minute songs while questioning every life decision that led you there.

Sunday was where things got truly weird—in the best possible way. Insane Clown Posse brought the Juggalos, Pierce the Veil delivered the emo catharsis, and then there was William Shatner, who at 95 decided that simply being a legendary actor wasn’t enough and apparently needed to become a heavy-metal frontman too. Naturally, he played Riot Fest. Naturally, it ruled.

Despite weather delays, shortened sets, mud pits, and the occasional feeling that your footwear might never be recovered, Riot Fest somehow pulled it off. It was loud, ridiculous, nostalgic, muddy, occasionally chaotic—and completely, unapologetically Riot Fest.

Would we do it again? Absolutely.

Would we wear better shoes? Also absolutely.
