Unusual Noise: Music from the Edge of Florida – November 7 – Dunedin Brewery

Unusual Noise: Music from the Edge of Florida is an incredible one-day gathering of adventurous music, spontaneous collaboration, improvisation, experimentation, and sounds that don’t always fit neatly into a genre. It takes place Saturday, November 7, at Dunedin Brewery.

Mike Bryant, proprietor of Dunedin Brewery, has had a penchant for unusual noise since he began making music as a teen. Bagpipes, punk, funk, electronica, space jazz, hard-core rap, improvisation, and experimentation have always been in the mix in his head and at hundreds upon hundreds of performances at the brewery by national superstars and local magicians as well. His own collectives have included Brain Emoji, Zero Context, No Standards, and Skallop.

This event is FREE and made possible in part through grant support from Creative Pinellas, with Bryant writing his first grant proposal. He is proud to put on such a wide-ranging program in Dunedin. He noted:

“Thankfully I have a passion for what I created as an art tourism event. Ultimately this event is the most significant of my personal taste for improvisation and spontaneous music, whether free jazz, jamband, or rap freestyle.”

Two stages. One day. No interest in playing it safe.

Unusual Noise: Music from the Edge of Florida brings together artists from across Florida and BEYOND whose work lives somewhere outside the usual lines, from jazz, funk, and hip-hop to electronic music, noise, improvisation, and whatever happens when those worlds collide.

At the top of the lineup are two gentlemen who regularly tour with Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade and who once were part of the titanic punk-metal jazz collective The Dead Kenny Gs: Skerik and Mike Dillon.

Skerik

Skerik is a saxophone colossus from Seattle who has been a regular on the concert and festival scene for more than two decades. His projects include Garage A Trois, Skerik’s Syncopated Taint Septet, The Skerik Band, Critters Buggin, Compersion Quartet, LORBO, Crack Sabbath, Bandalabra, Omaha Dinner, and Les Claypool’s Bastard Jazz. He is a monster on tenor and baritone, also effectively using loops. His set will be: Solo electronics with live visuals from Blazinspace.

Mike Dillon, The Vibraphone Destroyer, is a regular visitor to Dunedin Brewery, most notably with his trio Punkadelick and also as a featured performer. His projects include Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, Ten Hands, Billy Goat, Hairy Apes BMX, Mike Dillon’s Go-Go Jungle, Nolatet, and Les Claypool’s Bastard Jazz. He tours regularly with Rickie Lee Jones.

There is much, much more on the undercard, beginning with Joe Marcinek, the Sunshine Hoosier and a regular DunBrew visitor. Florida offers up some of its very best, including prog rock monsters Electric Kif and the upstart Mutant Fusion Collective. Bryant’s project Zero Context is also on the bill.

Rapper Jon Ditty, Seth Adam Lynn (Katara) on keyboards AND harp, tiny.blips (aka Jamie Newitt of The Heavy Pets), his bandmate Chris Patsis, and JR Williams will jump into the festivities. Same with Chaunces, Side Meat, Chamberbaes, Sunya, and Jazz Wilder.

More? Kristopher James, Tucker Sody (Ajeva, Future Vintage), J.D. Simpson (Between the Bluffs, Light the Wire), and the amazing Zach Stafford with his light projections.

This is NOT the yacht rock show. Prepare to have your brain twisted, folded, expanded, and delighted.
