Widespread Panic bringing the heat and ”Burning Down the House” to Wilmington

Widespread Panic returned to the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina, for two night, September 18 and 19, bringing the heat and ”Burning Down the House.” With both Friday and Saturday shows sold out, Widespread Panic continued to turn it up, delivering two heavy-duty shows at Live Oak Bank Pavilion. All those lucky enough to gain entry were treated each night, even ending with a huge bust-out to send everyone back home: ten years in the waiting for “Burning Down The House” (Talking Heads).

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18

Weather was an issue on Friday night as the band was six songs in before everyone was evacuated once again (Birmingham, this past April). Ugh… highlights pre-stoppage: “Papa Legba” into an early-set “Love Tractor” in the heavyduty Schools Zone > “Good People” and nice 16+ minute “Diner” > “Stop Breaking Down Blues” and “Imitation Leather Shoes,” and then we had to evacuate for about two hrs as heavy rains and winds blew through.

Set 2 began at 10:15, and the band were back on stage with a ten-song second set that kicked off with “The Take Out > Disco > Pleas,” and 7200 people were back getting their groove on again. “Trashy > Bust it Big” and then into really sweet “Galleon > Tackle Box Hero > Pilgrims,” ending the second set with “Porch Song.”

Encore: “City of Dreams > St. Ex,” and day one was in the books.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

Night 2: Weather outlook PERFECT, and our favorite band from Athens GA was back where we love them to be, on stage and ready for more, more, more!

First set featured nine songs, with a funky fun “Pigeons” opener into “Stop Go,” setting up another barnburner ahead with highlights that included “Greta > You Got Yours > Hatfield” and first-set ender “Blackout Blues.”

Set 2: Opening with Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me > Fishwater,”  transitioning really funky into almost 13-minute “Arleen” and back into “Fishwater.” Next a really trippy 17- minute plus “Second Skin,” leading into “Party at Your Mamma’s House > Drums > Cease Fire > C Brown.” “Up All Night > All Time Low” shut down set two.

Encore: “Halloween Face” into “Burning Down The House,” and the place went crazy; almost ten years since last time played (Nashville NYE 2016) Wow!!!
