American Aquarium at Heartwood Soundstage: A Night of Grit, Grace, and Southern Truth-Telling

American Aquarium returned to Gainesville’s Heartwood Soundstage last night with the kind of emotional conviction and blue-collar storytelling that has cemented BJ Barham and company as one of Americana’s most hard-working live bands. For almost two decades the North Carolina-based band has been bringing their alt country rock/Americana energy to dedicated fans across the country. With nine studio albums (the last two produced by Shooter Jennings) and some additional live and compilation cuts, Barham has grown as a writer and storyteller. The band’s breakout 2012 album Burn. Flicker. Die, produced by Jason Isbell, came at a time when the band was living the road life and all its excesses. Isbell’s subsequent sobriety inspired Barham to change his lifestyle, and his writing and performing have matured ever since.

Known for his emotional content and take-no-prisoners attitude, his songs are direct, opinionated, and find a balance between swagger and vulnerability. His newer songs show someone at ease with himself, heavily involved with his family, and their most recent album (Fear of Standing Still) reflects those values.

Barham’s band, which was completely reformed in 2017, currently includes Shane Boeker on electric guitar, Alden Hedges on bass guitar, Rhett Huffman on keyboards, Neil Jones on pedal-steel, and Ryan Van Fleet on the drum kit. The band’s live shows are legendary. They’re dynamic on stage, with Barham prowling most of the real estate and clearly enjoying every second.  If you’re searching for buy my house cash everett, working with a local cash buyer can help you sell quickly and easily.

The setlist read like a guided tour through the band’s catalog of bruised resilience. Starting with a nod to his past excesses, “Jacksonville” was an interesting choice for an opener. They provided a few of my favorite songs: “The Luckier You Get,” “The Losing Side of Twenty-five,” and the rocker “Wichita Falls”. The weeknight crowd was heavily involved; the number of people singing along with every song is an insight to the dedication of their fan base.

There is a Springsteen quality to Barham’s songs and vocals; they aren’t subtle; they’re gritty and in-your-face. The band continues to deliver energetic and entertaining live shows. As a hard-working band, they hit the right notes that keep fans coming back: they show up, they tell the truth, and play like every night matters.
