Gregg Allman on tour, just released Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon

“The road goes on forever.” In a career of ups and downs, battles with health issues and bandmates, and the recent retirement of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman is still with us, going strong at age 67. His tour continues with 27 more dates, starting next week at the Peach Festival and running through October.

And he just released a live album, Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon January 14, 2014. It is the first live Allman album since his 1974 release The Gregg Allman Tour. And this new recording comes on the heels of another great record, 2014’s All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs and Voice of Gregg Allman, from a huge show at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Allman has put together an outstanding horn-driven band featuring Scott Sharrard, guitar; Ron Johnson, bass; Ben Stivers, keyboards; Steve Potts, drums; Marc Quinones (ABB),  percussion; Jay Collins, sax; Art Edmaiston, sax; and Dennis Marion, trumpet. The horns add a great dimension and punch to the band’s sound.

This tour begins at the Peach Music Festival, appropriate given that this fest was designed by the Allman Brothers Band as a sort of Wanee-north. “I can’t wait to be back at the Peach in 2015,” says Gregg Allman. “The fans at Montage love what we do so much, and the bands feed off that. The Peach is always a great time.”

The 27 dates include festival appearances at the Laid Back Festival (appropriate as well!) in New York, the Blues and Brews Festival in Telluride, and the Sonoma Music Festival. The tour stretches from the east coast to the west. Along the way, the band shares the bill for eight shows with the Doobie Brothers.

In January, Allman returns to the Grand Opera House in Macon, home of the Allman Brothers Band, for two shows before embarking on the Rock Legends Cruise departing from Ft. Lauderdale.

Allman’s first solo release was Laid Back, but you can be sure his live performances will anything but!
