‘Red Sky’ at Night, Moon Hooch Fans’ Delight
“Cave Music / ˈkāv myo͞ozik / It’s like House, but its more wild, more jagged, more free, more natural to live in.”
That is the music Moon Hooch claims to play. And everyone who has ever seen this Brooklyn trio knows that this description is 100% accurate. This is full-frontal throw-down punk-metal-jazz-something. What it is in concert is… riveting. You just get caught up in this unrelenting wave of sound, propelled by Ginger Baker-like drumming.
These guys are so damn good.
Their recent tour hit California for four dates before stopping in Virginia and South Carolina. Tonight is the first of three Florida shows (Ybor City at The Crowbar), then three in Texas. They’ll work the West Coast in April and May, with festivals in Norway and more this summer.
Wenzl McGowen plays tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, contrabass clarinet, tubes, and EWI. Mike Wilbur plays tenor saxophone and synth, and he adds vocals. James Muschler is behind the drum kit.
